"What happened, Mr. Holmes?!" the Colonel demands as they wait for the rescue helicopter and police.
Holmes still kneels on the ground, his pants drenched with mud and blood, while he carefully craddles his friend close.
One of the maids got two blankets - one for each men, but Holmes gave both to Watson.
"I found the murderer," Holmes says shortly, his eyes never leaving his friend's face while one hand rests on his neck to check the heartbeat.
"I also found the man responsible for the murder."
"Is that not the same?" Ross says and an humorless grin stretches Holmes' lips. It looks like a grotesque mask and Ross shudders.
"Not in this case." Holmes draws the blankets more carefully around the body of the Doctor.
After a few minutes Ross notices that Holmes' body is shaking and at first he thinks that Holmes falls into shock. Then Holmes breaks out into loud guffaws, the sound echoing over the yard.
Ross has to correct himself - not shock, but madness.
"There is nothing funny about this!" he exclaims, but Holmes continues to chuckle deeply.
"By the way, I found your horse," Holmes manages to say, then nods at his friend. "Or more precisely, he found it. And in the end it found us. Quite funny, actually."
Ross splutters, not only taken aback by the mad laugther, but also about that information. "Silver Blaze? You found him? Where is he?!"
For the first time since his arrival Holmes looks up and directly at him, a mad grin on his face. "Right here."
Ross looks around, but there is only the black horse which pulled the wagon, still standing beside the detective and observing the Doctor.
"This is not the time to make jokes, Mr. Holmes," Ross says coldly and as sudden the laughter started it disappears and a snarl twist the other man's lips.
"Believe me, I know that. I know that very well."
Then with a speed Ross thought impossible, especially as Holmes manages to not jar his friend's body, the detective grabs the black horse's reins.
He wipes over the animal's brow, smearing blood over the coat and then turns the head for Ross to look at.
Beneath the blood, which turned almost black, is a white patch of fur visible on the horse's head.
The horse is actually his Silver Blaze!
At first he feels jubilant, but then frowns and turns back to Holmes. "You used my racing horse as a cart horse?!?"
Another unhumorous grin touches Holmes' face, when they can finally hear sirens and a chopper in the distance.
