A/N: Very unhappy with this... The prompt only gave me quite depressing thoughts and I had several starts on this ficlet, but every one just made it more difficult. So I just wrote this to be done with it...
And now excuse me - I am going to watch videos of fluffy kittens... :(

I recognize the look in his eyes; this lost expression and the dark shadows.
I have seen this look many times - in so many different faces. One of them my own.

I know what he feels, how he feels and I take a step back, lower my hands.
There is nothing I can do.

A single shot echoes through the silence.

Holmes and Lestrade run into the room just seconds after the shot, but I just shake my head and leave the house, leaving the dead man behind.

Outside I take a deep breath, looking up to the grey clouds and I can feel when Holmes steps to my side.
"You could not save him, Watson?" he asks silently and I only sigh.

"No, there was nothing I could do."
Because not everyone can be saved no matter what choice you make.

Yeah, I think this one leant itself to sad times for the author (as well as Watson).

It's hard to save someone who doesn't want to be saved. And sometimes, as hard as it is, it's better not to try.
