Being slowed down by his limp John falls behind as he and Sherlock sneak through the stable, steir steps almost silent on the hay.
Sherlock gets so far ahead that John can almost not see him anymore in the dark and so he misses how Sherlock expertly sidesteps a bucket on the floor. As John concentrates on his hurt leg, he is not aware of the bucket and cringes surprised when he knocks it over.
Sherlock whirls around, a growl on his lips, when a loud whimper and whicker deafens them. The horse in the box directly at their side throws it's head back and neighs panicked, as the bucket rolls over to it's legs.
"Damn it!" Sherlock swears silently, already looking through the windows to the house, when he sees movement in the corner of his eyes and looks back to his companion.
"Calm down, boy, everything's okay," John soothes with one hand outstretched and he continues to talk with a low and smooth voice. It only takes a few moments for the stallion to calm down again, shaking his head but then allowing John to touch his nose. John steps up to the horse, still talking and gently stroking it's long neck and nose, while looking without any hint of fear deeply into the dark, round eyes of the animal.
The horse calmed down fast enough without drawing anyone's attention and Sherlock can see the house still lies in silence and darkness.
He turns back to John, an unreadable expression in his eyes.
"I am constantly surprised by you, John", Sherlock murmurs and John looks at him, a calm expression on his face so different than Sherlock has seen so far on their hunts.
"What do you mean?" John asks, the words whispered in the same voice he used on the animal and Sherlock instantly feels how his own shoulders relax.
"You are a man of many talents," Sherlock continues and then turns around to go on. "One of them seems to be comfort."
"That I can comfort someone? I am a doctor," John answers with a last pat to the horse's nose, before following the detective through the darkness.
It is only a whisper, but the words are loud in the silence and they bring a gentle smile to John's lips.
"No, John. You are a comfort."
